The End Of Mobile

22nd February, 2013

One of the main purposes of this Blog is to keep you updated with the latest trends and ideas that are flowing around the Internet with a clear mind in regard to your own website and what you need to do to adapt your company needs to the online world.

We’ve gone from Desktop to Mobile and various iPad things in between over the last 5 years and I remember clearly talking about the Mobile Revolution since 2007.  Well it’s happened.

However – now it’s the end of mobile and this is what I mean.

In the future – no-one is going to care – your website will have to just work on everything.  If today I say your website is probably access via an iPhone by 25% of your customers it is probably true.  But in reality who cares.

An example – we used to worry tremendously over what Browser mattered – the days of the Internet Explorer or Netscape choice mattered and concerned anyone with a website.  These days the rule is simple the website has to work on all browsers.

In the old days we also cared about the Windows/Mac and the Screen size – the rough rule of thumb was that if 5% or more of your traffic came from Mac’s or people with 768 x 600 pixel screens it mattered.  Today your website just has to work for everyone.

We’re seeing exactly the same trend in the Desktop/Mobile war – in the future it just has to work.

Hard facts to realise this is happening.

  • Google Adwords – it has been possible for a while now to prevent Adverts showing up on Mobiles or Tablets – i.e. only on Desktop – the rational was that Advertising worked differently depending on whether you access via Mobile or Desktop.

By April Google will have removed this option… Your adverts will show up on any device or outlook.

  • Responsive Web Design – if you look at www.sky.com on a Desktop and then again on your Mobile – it’s the same website – but the layout is different.  The news, content, whatever is the same.  But it’s set up to work on any device.

More and more websites are like this – the content is the same – it’s just the layout that is slightly different.

So – you’ve been warned – the Mobile Revolution has largely happened – the question is did you do anything about it?
  • Test 1
Ask your self this question – Do you care whether people view your website on a Desktop, iPhone or Tablet?  – of course not – you never did.
  • Test 2
Have you looked at your website on your iPad and iPhone ? does it work? can you buy something? can you download the PDF? If not you need to do something about it.
I’d love to hear your views – comment comment comment – tell me what you think?  Am I right or Wrong?
