Search Engine Market Share

A surprising new statistic has come out in that Google Search Engine share has risen to 65% in the US, that’s quite a  hike and takes Google to a global share of 84%.

For a long time now we’ve know Google do well in Europe, particularly the UK where Market share is over 90%. (see www.impactmedia.co.uk).

However, we always know Google to suffer more in the US with roughly only half, and in the rest of the world like South America, China and Africa seeing Google share slump massively.  But this is changing.  China has a fifth of the worlds population yet it’s leading search engine Baidu has only 4.3% of the global market.

Google is obviously now seen as a target for governments and authorities to try and curb some of its increasing monopoly, but that’s actually a separate issue, in truth they’re doing a good job of search and people are appreciating it by using Google.

What does this mean to us.  Well first of all it’s worth visiting the links below to have a look for your self.  Secondly it shows that increasingly if you have a website you need to appreciate what Google can do for you.

Google’s underlying goal remains the same – Content is King – and that means, lots of content, fresh content and quality content.  Yes you can design a lovely website, yes you can get me to add photos, make changes, prettify things, but at the end of the day what is needed is pure and simple content.  A website that provides answers is infinitely more valuable than a super slick photo driven tour de force of your brochure.

So long as Google keeps putting Content first – sadly so will I… so please next time your thinking of your website – don’t ask me to redesign it… ask me to add another page.  I’ll be happier, Google will be happier and it’ll cost a whole lot less to boot.
