Creating a powerful Logo

It’s a bit of a weird one this month, in that it’s such a fundamental aspect of any corporate brand that it gets overlooked extremely easily. Creating a powerful logo is probably the most important aspect of any business.

The real crux is do you spend any money on it? If starting out on a new business venture, getting a website, choosing the company name and printing some business cards is right up there with designing a Logo. But that only adds to the pressure on finances.

These days there are some pretty fixed costs and ideas about starting a business, the logo rarely features. There are also plenty of online resources from www.canva.com to www.looka.com. But is this the right solution?

Your business needs a powerful logo – so what is the right thing to do. First impressions do count. So here is some advice based on NCompass’s 22 years of designing websites.

Our Advice on Powerful Logos

Take your time. There is no reason to be bullied into choosing a Logo because of cost or preference. This will be the look and feel of your company. Possibility for the next 20plus years. Look at options and be prepared.

Colour matters and the colours you choose will dictate everything. From Van Signage to letterhead, your Invoices to the clothes you wear, if you’re Redheaded, choosing a Purple Logo might not be the most sensible.

Think of the big picture. What is the biggest thing your Logo might end up on? Will it be repetitive? Will it be on packaging like Macdonalds, or classy like Tiffanies.

Be inspired and take note of other company logos, which make an impression on you and is/was it a positive impression. Without question, some Logos make people laugh or sad or they just hate them. Look around and see what you like.

Time, Colour, Placement and Impression are the biggest considerations when designing a powerful logo.

Powerful Logo’s Cost Money

Companies spend a colossal amount on their Brands and it pays back, Google has never changed their corporate colours, but its Logo has developed over time considerably. Most companies from Coca Cola to Rolex have constantly upgraded logos over the years. You should as well. Logo’s do not have to be fixed.

Starting a new business suggests a new idea, product or new service and a better way to carry it out. To give the business a fighting chance the Logo will be essential.

The logo is also the starting point of all marketing and sales. It gives confidence to employees and staff from the top to the bottom of the business. It will make selling the product or service easier as customers have more confidence in a complete package. If you offer a product without a brand on it, it might seem cheap, but with your powerful logo on the side, the story could be different.

Costs of Logos

You can design a logo yourself for free. All that is needed is a pencil and paper and it may be that you already have. But it will still be worth taking your idea to a professional graphic artist. Just to see if they can make it better.

Typical costs of a graphic design might be £100-£400. For this, they will usually present you with some choices. It’s also possible for you to request to see the logo as an example in situ. For example on a mug or water bottle or promotional piece.

The next price bracket for Logos is probably between £500 and £2000. This is more serious and usually, only graphic designers with a good reputation will be used. But the key difference is that you will be taken through a process. Questions will be asked about how you want to use the logo, what the target audience is, will it need a strapline.

The idea is to build up a picture of where and how the logo will be used.

After this, the sky is the limit, usually, you can employ a Brand Agency for which the logo is only part of the service. It would be easy to spend upwards of £50,000 for a Brand, based on the concept that millions of people might see the logo.
