Google: Not a time to be complacent

I’d appreciate it very much if ALL my clients read this brief missive because it does effect all clients wanting to achieve recognition for their websites and as Bod Dillon stated ‘Times they are a changing’.

Google works out where to list your website on about 200 bits of criteria, everything from the domain name you choose right through to the popularity of your website.  But two new things have occurred in the recent past:

  1. Google keep changing their Alogrithm’s i.e. the way they rank our website and
  2. Google now make their results much more personal
Before I list what all this means, let me say that for the most part a lot of our websites are not getting fewer visitors to their websites.  Typically websites are getting 30% fewer visitors and that’s quite severe.
The main reason for this is that your website is appearing further down the Google page and instead of ranking 3rd or 4th – you’re now 10th or 12th etc.  All bad news.
Now for the reasons:
  1. Google like ‘fresh’ content – websites that update frequently with new news or changed get noticed, I can categorically say all websites that are updated go up the Google ranking.
  2. Google likes social – you might not – and I’d say that applies to 50% of my clients – but Google does… it’s now hurting you, if you don’t Tweet, Facebook, Google plus – your website is not going to be ranked well.
  3. Google likes personal – Google is trying to replicate the ‘word-of-mouth’ syndrome – if people recommend your website then you’ll go up the search engines.
Not a time to be complacent
Sadly this is not the time to be complacent – you website is vying for visitors with 300million other websites, Yet Most people spend Most of their Internet time on just a few websites.
The days of making a website and then not changing it for months on end are well and truly gone.  If you want your website to contribute to your business, then you must act now..
