Is there no limit to a Politicians Self Importance

This is a disaster; I’m increasingly sickened by our politicians, and one politician in particular, Nick Clegg!

Is there no limit to the self importance of these people – all they seem to care about is Electoral Reform – yes that’s right all they care about is how they get elected.

All English people should be ashamed of themselves, this is NOT the time to wonder about the rights and wrongs of a 1st past the post system – never mind that it’s served us extremely well for 400 years!

Suddenly everything depends on Nick Clegg and all he cares about is how he can get more seats in parliament. I have two points to make:

Firstly – they’ll get it wrong I guarantee it – whether they choose Labours AV voting system or LibDems STV systems (see BBC website) all the alternatives are worse that the current system.

If we cave in and choose another system it will give many smaller parties a greater chance and it will lead to more coalitions, more hung parliaments, weaker governments and more extremism in politics. If the LibDems stand to gain so does the BNP.

Secondly – the golden rule for lawmakers is that Law should be made from a position of strength, rushed and ill thought out law making leads to a wealth of problems down the line. Many of Labour ills are caused by bad law, contradicting existing law and so on. It’s a mess.

Moving on, I have only a little more to say. People have to realise that Gordon Brown will do anything to stay in power, let none of us mistake the fact he is selling out Labours own supporters with the carrot of Electoral Reform. We can expect him therefore to continue to sell out the British People has he has so effectively done these last few years.

Gordon Brown is trying to break up the Conservative LibDem talks with overtures that quite frankly demean the whole of politics. It’s a mud bath and trust English politicians to make a mess of it.

Right now all I can see are self serving interests being bandied around while the country falls apart economically.

  1. Hi Betsy, what the LibDems are cross about is that they had 22% of the popular vote yet only 9% of the parliamentary seats. If we had PR (which is not really on the cards) it would mean 22% of the MP's would be LibDem which to further Clegg's prospects quite dramatically.

  2. What I don't understand is why so many people say they are keen on PR and think we need a referendum. It seems to me we already have PR available with the current system and we are seeing it in inglorious action at the moment. How else could a minority party led by Nick Clegg be calling the shots?

  3. Thanks Patrick – also to note is the silence on the NI increase proposed by Labour… Bet Nick Clegg let Labour go through with it!

  4. I wish I could disagree, but I can't. What happened yesterday was shabby in the extreme. I just hope the Conservatives keep their heads.

The breach of trust will make a stable, formal coalition less likely. But there is still the possibility of a minority government with the supply and whatsit arrangement.

Alternatively, Lib_Lab stitch up could fall apart within months and then they would both get their come-uppance. For the country at large this might mean short term pain for longer term gain.
