The death of WWW – it’s happening

It’s official – websites I design will no longer support the www in the domain name.  So what’s this all about them.  no more domain names?

Not quite – but I’ve just worked out that I virtually never type in the www in a domain name any more, if I want to visit YouTube or Amazon I just get typing the name, ignoring the precursor.

It might sound normal, and I suppose it is normal now, but not so long ago funny results might have ended up if one didn’t type in the exact domain name verbatim.

There there’s my favourite topic, Mobile, of course people on a Mobile phone just don’t want to bother typing more than they have to.

These days there is another concession as well, SEO, search engines like Google view www.example.com and just example.com as two different websites and that leads to being marked down at duplicate content, so you will be penalised.

So as a matter of course from this point forward, we will only be designing websites with one Domain in mind and that is sans www.

There is however, one single area where the www is still needed and that is in in emails, if you type in the domain name with a www into your email it will come out at the recipients end hyperlinked.  So obviously all websites will still work with a www.  Just they’ll automatically redirect to a version of the website without it.

See www.sannegrundberg.com or www.orbig.co.uk for examples.
