Content is King – or is it?

Have we all been diddled?  There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that to be successful on line you need to be producing a mass of content, products, reviews, Blogs, tweets, you name it, everything helps.  You have to join the band wagon and play the Google Game – get recognised to sell your wares and survive the wild west of the Internet.

But have you given it any thought in the background of all your hard work… have you wondered why we all have to be so super knowledgeable and social in our areas of expertise.  Have you wondered what is supporting the mass of information overload.  Well it’s advertising and hardware…

Here’s roughly what i am picking up… We’re all wanting the latest gadget to run the latest something for our enjoyment or work… but to pay for it we’re having to supply the content.  Think iPad, Android whatever, it’s us that’s making it worthwhile having these things… if we weren’t filling Facebook everyday we wouldn’t need that latest phone.

This has been said before – but now lets take a closer look – let’s follow the money… in IT the general rule is prices are going down according to how popular something is.  It’s expensive until mass adoption comes along.  Newspapers they’ve suffered, they produce content, authors, musicians, film makers – they having serious issues with the internet… the money is being sucked out of these ‘creative’ industries and distributed instead to a few big giants, Apple with a 30% fee on all sales.

Be it national Telecom companies, with fibre optics, and free phone calls, we’re all hurting… but look around and see whose not hurting.  Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft they seem to have something right don’t they?

Well actually they do – they have been utterly ruthless in their pursuit of our money, we buy their products without noticing and still less without a murmur of complaint… we put up with their advertising and buy their hardware.

But lets make no mistake about this, all that is going on is a fundamental shift in where our money goes… instead of into a journalist or musician or author or even bricklayer, plumber, lawyer – it is going into one of the big 5 IT firms.

The real magic is that they simply have no competition… and are very unlikely ever too.  Why – I hear you ask – because Content is King and we’d rather be top of Google than anything else and for that matter we’d rather an iPad as well and so long as that is the case Google and Apple will stay on top.
