Some Gmail Nuances

I thought I’d write a short snippet about some Gmail nuances I have recently being discovering, while such a massive operation Google (unlike competitors) still seem to think of such completely original ideas.

Ever wonder about dealing with multiple email addresses… Don’t bother – Just use Gmail.

When you register a Gmail account and you choose your name (mine is [email protected]) here’s a couple of tips:

  1. Don’t worry about the full stops (dots or periods), [email protected], [email protected] will all work just as well.  So [email protected] is the same email address as [email protected].

Google just said, to prevent naming confusion let them all work.

  2. The + (plus) sign – [email protected], works, [email protected], [email protected] works.

This also means you can sign up to websites using specific email address that then can be tracked, [email protected], [email protected]

    The + sign indicates a ‘sub’ email…

So where’s the power – well you can filter your email based on the email address.  If you buy something from Amazon, that email can be filtered to go into your ‘shopping’ folder. If you want to separate business from private you could have [email protected] for business and [email protected] for home (note the position of the dot).

For companies this is simply brilliant, it’s a whole league on from Exchange.  You can forward all your email to a single email address and then deal with it properly, efficiently and in a controlled and cost effective manner.

Let’s say you have the email addresses [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], these can be set up as forwarders to [email protected], [email protected], [email protected].

These emails will then be filtered, files and rerouted to exactly where you need them.

So what’s the point? – I hear you say and if you haven’t got it yet, then I am surprised. It’s TOTAL CONTROL for the grand cost of NOTHING.  Imagine no more Exchange, no more dependence on a server in the office, no more calling the IT boys in, no more having to set up email accounts.  All you need is access to one single Gmail account.

You get full backup, you can redirect email in an instance, you get access to some of the worlds best anti spam filters, you get an extremely reliable service, you get 24/7 access.

My feelings on this are that this is a vastly under estimated resource from one of the world’s leading email providers, with a very small amount of thought process you can have a dynamic, responsive and extremely efficient email service.
